Joni Mitchell is a Canadian-American painter, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. One of the most significant singer-songwriters to come out of the folk music scene of the 1960s, Mitchell is renowned for her unique compositions and personal lyrics that eventually incorporated pop and jazz elements. She has won eleven Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, among other honors. "One of the greatest songwriters ever," according to Rolling Stone, and "the most important and influential female recording artist of the late 20th century," according to AllMusic.
Mitchell has created songs in almost 50 tunings, playing what she has referred to as "Joni's weird chords"; nonetheless, nearly every song she has penned on the guitar uses an open, or non-standard, tuning. Mitchell has written some of her most well-known songs on the piano. Guitarists can create more varied and expansive textures of accompaniment by using different tunings. Over the years, her right-hand picking/strumming approach has changed. The guitar tracks on her first album showcased her first meticulous picking skill. Now, her style is more relaxed and rhythmic, occasionally incorporating percussive "slaps".
Many other artists have been influenced by Mitchell's work, such as Taylor Swift, Björk, Prince, Ellie Goulding, Harry Styles, Corinne Bailey Rae, Gabrielle Aplin, Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth, David Gilmour from Pink Floyd, Marillion members Steve Hogarth and Steve Rothery, Paul Carrack,Haim, Lorde, and Madonna.
Apart from her 11 Grammy awards, Mitchell has received numerous honors especially in Canada. She was her inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1981, and in 1996 she was awarded Canada's highest honor in the performing arts, the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement. In 2000, Mitchell was granted a star on the country's Walk of Fame. In 2002, she was named a Companion of the Order of Canada, the country's highest civilian honor. Mitchell is only the third well-known Canadian singer-songwriter to have received this distinction. In 2004, she was awarded an honorary doctorate in music by McGill University. She received her induction into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in January 2007.
In 1993, Joni received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Saskatchewan Recording Industry Association. Canada Post also featured Mitchell on a postage stamp in June 2007.
