The Gipsy Kings have had a significant impact on both the flamenco genre and, more broadly, world music. They combine jazz, western pop, and Latin beats with flamenco. The band, originally known as Los Reyes, was formed in 1979 by two sets of brothers, the Reyes and the Baliardos. To date, the group has sold over 25 million records worldwide.
Even if you're not familiar with them, you've definitely heard their music on TV or in movies. Their rendition of "Hotel California" by The Eagles serves as the background music for Jesus' dance scene in The Big Lebowski, while their rendition of "You've Got a Friend in Me" from Toy Story 3 makes Buzz's hips shake.
Even though the trio has experimented with several genres of music, flamenco remains their favorite. In 2013, they commemorated this romance with Savor Flamenco, their thirteenth studio album for which they were recognized with a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.
You shouldn't miss out on an occasion such as this, so be sure to catch Gipsy Kings when they tour through your area.
This year's concert season at the iconic Los Angeles Venue - the Hollywood Bowl - will host the iconic Gipsy Kings ft. Nicolas Reyes. When this show comes to the city, fans better be sure not to miss out on it! It's going to be an unforgettable night of good music and dazzling tunes.
About Gypsy Kings:
Originally known as Los Reyes, the Gypsy Kings kicked off their musical journey back in 1979 in Arles, France. What's cool is that the band members have Catalan roots, which adds a unique flavor to their sound.
Their music is like a spicy mix of Catalan rumba, flamenco, salsa, and pop vibes. And get this, they mostly belt out tunes in Catalan, but they sprinkle in Spanish and even some southern French languages like Occitan.
Even though they grew up in France, the Gipsy Kings' roots trace back to Spanish Romani families who fled during the chaos of the 1930s Spanish Civil War. They're famous for taking rumba flamenca, a funky spin on traditional flamenco, and giving it a global stage. They've also got an ear for putting their own spin on English-language pop hits.
