Formed in 1985, the 4 time Grammy Award winning R&B band was first named Unique Attraction. They eventually called the group "Boyz II Men," after New Edition's "Boys to Men" from the 1988 album Heart Break, after finding inspiration in the group's harmonies and antics.
In 1989, they broke in a concert at the Philadelphia Civic Center sponsored by local radio station Power 99. Their goal was to track down Will Smith backstage and give him a performance. In the process of searching for Smith, they ran into Michael Bivins, a member of New Edition, who, along with Ricky Bell and Ronnie DeVoe, had recently announced that they were going to form the New Edition spin-off trio Bell Biv DeVoe. They then sang "Can You Stand the Rain" by New Edition, and everyone who witnessed this was so impressed.
Boyz II Men didn’t follow the typical R&B group setup of one or two lead vocalists and a bunch of backup singers. From the start, all four members stood as lead singers. They eventually made their name known for their multiple-lead arrangements. Each of their voices could easily be identified. It became common to hear the tenor voice of Wanyá Morris, the baritone of Nathan Morris, the tenor of Shawn Stockman, and the bass of Michael McCary (who frequently appears in spoken-word sections of many of the band's successes).
“I’ll Make Love to You,” released in 1994, is considered to be their most popular song, staying No.1 for 14 weeks and staying on the Billboard charts for 33 weeks.
Boyz II Men received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on January 5, 2012 and was named by Billboard magazine as the biggest boy band, forever making them one of the most popular names in R&B. They were highlighted in the first episode of the 2021 Netflix series, “This is Pop.”
While Michael McCary left in 2003 because of his diagnosis with multiple sclerosis, Boyz II Men continues to perform their songs known for their poetic lyrics matched with their stunning vocal harmony. In 2017, they released their 14th studio album, Under the Starlight.
Make sure you’re part of their Fireworks Finale on the 13th of September 2024!
